Last quarter, a national bank lost Rs 312 crore in market cap because -
its payment gateway went offline.

  • Not hacked

  • Not breached

  • Just down

The outage lasted three hours. The panic lasted three days.
The trust damage? Still counting.

This is the new reality of tech in 2025 - when infrastructure reliability is not an IT problem anymore.

It is a boardroom conversation. Because when uptime drops, valuations follow.

The Shift Nobody Saw Coming

For decades, "uptime" was a checkbox metric.
99.9 percent meant you were safe.

Now, even a few minutes of downtime can light up investor calls, news headlines, and customer rage threads on X.

Why?

Because every business is now a digital business. If your platform is down, your reputation is down.

In 2024 alone,
global enterprises lost over $9.5 billion to downtime-related stock dips - according to IDC’s Q1 report.

That is not counting brand erosion or customer churn.

A retail company in Mumbai saw 30 percent drop in app traffic after a three-hour payment failure. When the story hit the media, investors did not wait for explanations - they downgraded confidence overnight.

The Anatomy of an Outage

Most failures are not cinematic.
They start with one ignored alert, one delayed patch, or one network bottleneck nobody thought was serious.
Then everything snowballs.

A telecom firm we audited last year had a minor switch failure that took down half its core routers.
No redundancy, no failover, no NOC alerting escalation.
A full 6-hour blackout that made front-page news.

The IT head’s statement in the postmortem still stings: "We optimized for uptime. We never planned for resilience."

Why This Is Happening Now

Three words :

Complexity
Expectation
Exposure.

Complexity : Multi-cloud, hybrid environments, IoT - your network map now looks like a web spun by a caffeinated spider.

Expectation : Customers want instant access, zero lag, 24/7 support - and will switch brands if they do not get it.

Exposure : Every outage becomes public in minutes. The market does not care whether it is AWS or your router - they just see "service down."

The more digital you become, the more your uptime becomes your credibility.

The Investor Angle Nobody Talks About

CIOs used to present uptime stats to their CEOs.
Now CFOs and investor relations teams want.

Investors see downtime as operational fragility - a signal that internal systems, risk posture, or vendor controls might be shaky.
It is not just about apps. It is about governance.

In company, the CTO is now required to co-sign quarterly risk disclosures alongside the CFO.
Why?

Because regulators and investors now rank resilience as a key performance metric.

My Take: Resilience > Availability

Here is the paradox : most NOC teams still get rewarded for uptime.
But uptime means nothing without continuity.

Think of resilience as uptime with foresight.

The ability to detect, isolate, and recover before your customer even notices.
It is what separates an IT glitch from a crisis headline.

We have built NOCs for clients who learned this the hard way - moving from "keep the lights on" to "keep the lights stable."

One BFSI client now runs twin-site NOCs with mirrored alerting and AI-assisted anomaly detection. They have cut mean time to recovery by 53 percent. And not a single outage has hit their quarterly earnings call since.

That is not just IT performance. That is brand insurance.

What Boards Want in 2025

When we talk to leadership teams now, the top questions are not about servers or switches. They are about risk optics.

  1. Can you show a live view of system health right now?

  2. What is your mean time to detect (MTTD) and recover (MTTR)?

  3. How do you communicate incidents to customers before Twitter does?

  4. And the big one : how are you proving resilience, not just claiming it?

Because the truth is : investors no longer fear cyberattacks - they fear poor responses.

If your uptime metrics look good on paper but bad in headlines, it is time to rethink what "always-on" really means.
